When I started working out at Orangetheory, I began looking for ways to improve my diet. After adopting a keto diet for anxiety and weight loss, an eating plan that works for my body type, I was eager to find ways to satisfy my sweet tooth without going off the wagon. That’s when Fit Donut entered my life.
One day, they provided samples at the gym. Caleb, who was two at the time, and I tried a few flavors and we were both hooked. I couldn’t believe my toddler was scarfing down a “healthy” donut! For a few weeks, I kept thinking about them and, finally, Josh and I decided to stop in and check out the place.
What’s a Fit Donut?
The owners at Fit Donut set out to create a treat that was high protein, low fat, low carb, and low sugar! That’s a tall order for baked goods. Made with fresh ingredients, the standard “fit donuts” contain a combination of some or all of the following ingredients:
- Almond milk
- Cashew milk
- Coconut Oil
- Almond Flour
- Whole Grain Blend Flour
- Coconut Flour
- Whey Protein (Does contain low amount of milk product)
- Gluten Free Oats
- Powdered Peanut Butter
- Cocoa Powder
- Sea Salt
The gluten-free blend (yes, they even make gluten-free donuts!) includes rice flour, potato flour, and tapioca. Do they taste like actual donuts? No. Let’s not kid ourselves. If you’re looking for Krispy Kreme, this will not scratch that itch. If you’re looking for an alternative to the greasy, sugary confections, this is a solid option.
What We Order
During a typical week, we might stop into Fit Donut as many as three times. While they can be frozen, we prefer to go pick up a fresh box of this delicious treat every couple days. It’s great because Hayley and I really love the low carb options, while Oliver thoroughly enjoys his gluten-free treat for breakfast (they cover it in a peanut butter glaze).
There are many different flavors on the menu and, sometimes, they add seasonal flavors. We went absolutely crazy for the Pumpkin Spice around Halloween and the Peppermint Mocha at Christmas (I enjoyed mine with eggnog and tea at night!). Overall, these are our favorite varieties:
- Coconut Cluster
- Peanut Butter Cluster
- Raspberry Lemonade
- Banana Nut
An added perk is that, despite being a small business, they have a great rewards program. Considering how much we buy, it really pays off. About once a month, we have enough points accumulated that we can use towards buying even more Fit Donuts!
It’s exciting to see more and more options becoming available for those on a keto or gluten free diet. Fit Donut is only available in Idaho, but hopefully they will be successful enough to expand across the country. If not, maybe similar places will start cropping up. Everyone deserves a Fit Donut, and they’ve really helped me stay on track with my commitment to healthy eating! If you ever find yourself in the Boise area, do yourself a favor and grab one!
