Oh my goodness. It might not be for everyone, but I’m happiest when I’m eating a keto diet. It helps keep my anxiety under control, especially if I’m traveling. Of course, I do give myself some allowance for indulgence when I’m on the road, but when I’m home, I definitely try to keep it low carb. That’s why this keto chaffle recipe speaks to my soul. I’m a huge fan of of the traditional breakfast item, but haven’t had much success finding a gluten free waffle alternative.
There is a lot out there, so I wanted to put together a collection of the best keto waffle recipes for you to try. I’ve chosen some that are eaten with butter and sugar-free syrup, but also some that are savory. I’m a woman who enjoys having options, so I like given that to my readers too!
What Is a Keto Chaffle?
You may have heard of “fathead dough” where people use cheese to make keto bread (or pigs in a blanket!). It’s super easy and some people even use their microwave to melt the cheese (I prefer doing it in a pan on the stove). This kind of goes along with that trend, but it’s even easier. The basic keto chaffle recipe includes the following:
- Eggs (one egg, usually)
- Almond flour
That’s it! Really, unless you are jazzing it up in some way, this is all you need for a great low carb waffle! Sometimes, the best things in life are so simple! You don’t need to put it in a blender or food processor — just mix everything together in a bowl and pour into your waffle maker. We can all do that, right? There’s nothing I like better than a tasty recipe that takes literal minutes to make!
What Is The Best Waffle Maker for Keto Chaffle?
You might be looking for the best waffle iron for making chaffle, but really it’s going to depend on your preferences. In my experience, the ones that allow you to flip/rotate work best. Keto waffle batter is thicker and often greasier than traditional batter, which makes it tough to spread. Flipping the waffle maker allows for more even distribution.
That being said, the DASH Mini Waffle Maker is just $10 and people really like it. Another popular, but slightly larger mini waffle maker is the Burgess Brothers ChurWaffle Maker. I spot it included in so many recipe posts, but I have never tried it myself.
Personally, I like using a cast iron waffle maker. Okay, it’s not really a waffle maker, it’s more of a stove top pan that I can use to make mini waffles. It’s quick, easy and the perfect size for breakfast or sliders. Whip up some keto fried chicken tenders and serve them with these chaffles — keto chicken and waffles, anyone!? Yes, please! Are you ready to make some amazing low carb breakfast food? Let’s check out the chaffle recipes!
Hangry Woman has a really cool site, and I like how to seasons her food. For example, while some keep things pretty basic (a neutral palate is a great thing!), she adds some cinnamon and vanilla to her chaffle recipe. Plus, she uses mozzarella cheese and that’s better for the sweet variety of these keto waffles, in my opinion.
Also, just look at this picture. Are you drooling yet? I am. She recommends and uses the ChocZero maple pecan syrup and some of her users complained that it impacts blood sugar too much. She explained that the effect on her is minimal and reminded everyone to make their own decisions and I completely agree. I tend to stick with Walden Farms – Calorie Free Pancake Syrup but really just boils down to personal preference! If you’re interested in making her keto waffles, click here!
Low Carb Keto Chaffles
We’ve talked about how chaffles are super easy to make with just three ingredients, but what if you could make keto waffles even simpler? That Low Carb Life cuts out the almond flour entirely, and just uses eggs and cheese! Wow! I’ll confess that I haven’t tried this one yet, but it’s high on my list. Maybe I need to go make some right now…
The texture for these is said to be even lighter than the other recipes, but there is more of an egg flavor. I don’t mind that at all, but I like making my keto waffles with almond flour. This is a great option for people who have nut allergies or want to skip any type of flour entirely. For the low carb chaffle recipe, click here!
Traditional Keto Chaffle
Butter Together has a recipe for a traditional keto chaffle along with tips for finding the right texture. Not everyone wants something super crispy, and this site has suggestions for tweaking the process to get it right. I really like my waffles to have a bit of crunch, so I’m definitely taking notes on this one!
They also offer guidance for people who find the taste too “eggy” for their tastes. I’ve definitely had that problem, so I’m going to try the workaround they mention. Best of all, they include links to many variations on the keto waffle recipe, so if you’re interested, click here!
Best Pizza Chaffle
When we went to Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios Florida, we noticed that one of the most popular food items was the pizza fries. They just look really good in the pan, but aren’t good enough for me to waste the carbs. So, this recipe for the best pizza chaffle is PERFECT!!! Just look at this in all its crispy, cheesy, meaty glory!
There’s a little more to this recipe, but it looks delightfully low carb and high fat. Plus, it reminds me so much of those pizza fries without having to mess up my macros. This is what we’re all here for, right? New, healthier alternatives to some of our old favorites. So good. If you’re interested in these savory keto waffles, click here!
Keto Chaffles 5 Ways
I really can’t get enough of Maya over on Wholesome Yum! She’s always got great content and seems to go the extra mile for her readers. Love it. It makes me feel so seen, and every recipe I’ve tried from that site has been fantastic. Thank you, Maya! So, if you haven’t been to Wholesome Yum, you’ll want to go check out this recipe for the chaffle.
On top of that, she’s got instructions for how to make these keto waffles in five different ways. The Pumpkin one is a great keto Halloween recipe but I feel like the Cinnamon Churro is calling my name. Really, I could eat any one of these and probably be very happy. Useful Kitchen Tools for Making Keto Chaffle
The cool thing about making keto waffles is that you don’t really need anything too special. You won’t need a blender or food processor — just mix in your favorite bowl. If you do choose to use almond flour, I’ve included a link below to my favorite brand. I just like the texture and I can sometimes find the big bags at Costco 🙂
- Kirkland Signature Almond Flour Blanched California Superfine
- Dash Mini Waffle Maker
- KitchenAid Nylon Flex Turner, Red
- Walden Farms – Calorie Free Pancake Syrup
You don’t absolutely need a turner, but I like to use one. I prefer to avoid scratching the non-stick coating on my waffle pan so I use a nylon tool to take out my chaffles. Again, you will have to find the syrup that works best for you, but we love the one from Walden Farms. It’s a little thicker than you’d expect but that’s part of the allure. It just coats and sticks to the keto waffles so much better than the thinner stuff, which means I can use less.
Keto Keeps Getting Better
I don’t know about you, but I feel like the options for low carb eaters just keep getting better. We’re getting so creative with finding ways to eat great without added sugars and wheat in our diet. I’ll admit that there are times when I’m a little more paleo because potatoes and rice just feel good in the winter months, but I also come back to keto when I need it. Especially, if I start feeling the impact on my mental health.
If you haven’t read it already, check out my post about using the keto diet for anxiety. Believe it or not, there’s some science behind this, and I believe we’ll see more evidence in the future. In the meantime, I’m going to stick with my low carb, high fat eating strategy to keep losing weight and feeling better.
